Monique Laurent was ruthless and intelligent — our favorite kind of kickass female.
Monique was a gambler.
Well, what she did wasn’t really gambling so much as winning, reliably, over and over.
Monique was a cheater.
A good one.
She hid a radio transceiver in a pack of cigarettes and used it to control a little robot roulette ball.
When Monique worked her cigarette pack, the special roulette ball would fall on one of six numbers about 90% of the time. Her accomplice, who was clued in and placed his bets accordingly, would then collect. Simple!
So simple that the casino was at a loss. They dismantled the roulette wheel, thinking it was faulty, but couldn’t find anything wrong. So they put it back together. And Monique and her friend kept winning.
They pulled in five million francs in about a week running this little scheme, and they might have gotten away with it for even longer … except the casino owner became enamored of Monique.
She tried to turn him down nicely, but he got all stalker. He started watching her whenever she came in and noticing who she was talking to and the whole nine creepy yards. But while he was watching her, he noticed:
- She always stood next to the winning table
- She rarely bet herself
- She played with her cigarette case constantly, but never took a cigarette out of it
So he went over and asked her for a cigarette. Of course, she didn’t have any in her little case-that-was-actually-a-remote-control. The jig was up.
The moral of the story is: if you’re going to rob a casino, maybe wear frumpy clothes and skip the shower. Then you should be able to cheat in peace.
